(a) Full Flow Type: The entire oil is cleaned with the filters.
(b) By-pass Type: In this type of filter, some quantity of oil keeps on going into the engine without being cleaned. Therefore, even when the filter is closed due to grit and foreign materials, some oil continue to go on into the engine.
